Doppleganger posting in Many Moods of the Doppleganger
8:02 AM 3/28/10 · Okay, since the last time I posted about this I've been doing some research into the issue; that being LJ's new mood theme restriction, if you missed the memo. All mood themes that're larger than 100x100 have been automatically reduced. For those of you that don't actually customize your moods, or use those made by others, up until about 2 weeks ago the maximum default for all mood sprites was 255x255. Admittedly, that's a bit big for most people's purposes (I made 2 that large just for the fuck of it) but I'm just being thorough here.

Here's one of them: Clicky! You will notice that despite the fact the 100x100 restriction has been instituted those mood sprites remain much larger. That's because the restriction only effects mood displays when used in actual journals. The 255x255 restriction is still in effect when displayed outside of journals...

...or when shown in any view that is not a paid or plus account, like so: Clicky!

Yeah, most of the moods I make are larger than 100x100. Hence why I'm so annoyed by this new feature. However, it's not so all inclusive as you might think. I own a Kindle (wait for it) and even though I can't post to livejournal through it I can read stuff just fine. It was doing this Saturday morning I made an interesting discovery.

My mood theme displayed on my journal the way it's supposed to! A little later that same day I decided to check a different browser type than I usually use; I'm an Internet Explorer kinda guy. The mood displays correctly when viewed under Mozilla Firefox too!

The 100x100 restriction is specifically designed for Internet Explorer...so far as I know. I'm not that familiar with other browsers outside of these 3.

I've run into this problem before. Upon my behest I requested the moderator of marvel_universe update the background of that community and I provided several options. He did it but the thing is I can't see it with IE...but it's perfectly viewable with Firefox.

Go figure.

So long as you don't use Internet Explorer you're fine. However, I do more often then not so I couldn't just let it go at that. I noticed another odd little curiosity due to the fact that in IE my mood theme isn't visible on my account at all. Nor viewing anything on my friendslist. See, the IE view resizes mood themes but certain journal themes don't allow for visible mood themes at all. My journal utilizes the journal theme The Boxer. Decided to poke around and see what others weren't working.

Did I mention that I moderate over 100 communities? Not as hard as you might think, most people don't post as often as I'd like. Even though I use the standard journal themes I try to make each journal look as unique as possible, hence why I make mood themes. Also means I can check out a lot of different journal themes easily enough by looking directly at each of my communities in turn...

...I don't use all of the available journal themes though. Believe it or not, even before this new restriction there were already journal themes that didn't allow for a visible mood theme display. Still, I do use most of them.

There's probably more but these are the journal themes I know don't display moods that used to under IE: The Boxer, Refried Paper, Disjointed, & Component.

The mood themes that I painstakingly made for myself are all over 100x100 and I was royally ticked to see them shrunk down. ¬_¬*

BTW, I AM using Firefox and they appear resized to me. I am not happy with LJ about this at all.

All firefox views I've seen haven't resized them. Not sure what to make of that. Maybe it's a different version thing?

My custom mood theme I use on a community LJ quit showing up on IE recently--and they're all smaller than 100x100. But I noticed there was an anncouncement about that on the support board, so I'm just impatiently waiting to be able to see them again (however, my personal LJ that uses the same mood theme shows up just fine, heh).

Thanks for the information!

I use an Eric Northman mood theme created by someone and am very perturbed that not all the moods show up. I don't use IE, I use Safari.
Somehow, it's still affected though.

Well, I don't use a lot of browsers but I'm not surprised it effects more than just IE.

Doppleganger: Hey your picture didn't work
Oh. It's not the restriction that's your problem.

I skimmed your journal to find one of the moods that didn't work. That's its URL. It seems that some of the mood images in your mood theme are no longer valid images.

I have that happen fairly often.

Yeah but what's crazy is I can go into my Photobucket, and the picture is there.
I've tried so many times recopying the links and putting them into the custom mood theme and it doesn't work.
I had a bitch of a time entering all the moods in and getting different pics to come up at all. It wanted to give each mood the same gif.

Well...the URL doesn't have an image file extension on it (GIF, PNG, JPG) so maybe it's not a complete link?

Yeah, the moods default is 15 main branches ith multiples under them. You just gotta remember to undo the little checked boxes.

Even though most of my mood themes seemed to have evaded that size limitation, it does irk me because I've seen many large sized mood themes that were very nice!

I haven't had the time to work on any mood themes lately (most of this year in fact). Thank you for for informing me! ^^ I use firefox so I never really noticed that LJ did that :o

Hi. I've been busy these last weeks, so when I noticed some changes to my moodthemes I assumed it was because my Paid Account had expired (like I said, I was busy), but now that I came back home and relaxed, this post is the one with most information on the change.

I've tried some of the LJ official news comms, but either I'm a lousy reader (totally possible) or the info I want is not there. Do you know WHY they decided to resize the moodthemes? Right now it makes no sense to me, and that's just making me angrier (my favorite moodtheme came in sentences. In the new size, I can only see black squiggles. *breathes deeply*

I know where they reported it, but they never said why. I even asked them directly but didn't get a definitive answer on the subject.

By the by, if you setup a mood theme and your paid account expires you keep the mood them. You just can't setup new ones in basic status.

Thank you. If you ever find out the reason, please remember to link me up? I'm still steaming over the whole thing (I spent a lot of time making my sentence moodtheme, and it's not as if I can use it somewhere else) - and I've gotten so used to Component I still haven't changed it even though my Wolf's Rain mood isn't showing.

I just would like to know why. If it makes sense and it's for the better good, hurray (kinda). But not knowing AND that they haven't said, is just making me antsy.
